According to The New York Times, "Sunday" was written on the evening of December 12, and recorded the next night. The production of "Lazy Sunday" epitomizes Samberg's gifts as a musical parodist, performer, and collaborator (the song was co-written by Schaffer, Taccone, and Chris Parnell), as well as the unbelievable speed with which these videos were pumped out. The second ever Digital Short, the still-wonderful "Lazy Sunday", more or less ushered YouTube (and the attendant controversies around sharing copyrighted content) into the public imagination, as NBC rushed to keep up with the video's online circulation in the days and weeks after its December 2005 airing. If not just straight-up hilarious, they at least provided something bizarre to talk about on Twitter the next morning (or as they were airing).Īnd that interaction was inextricable from its source- these clips were made particularly to trigger conversations online. Typically arriving in the first third of the show (unless they were extremely weird, in which case they'd be buried toward the end), these shorts quickly became the default highlight of each episode, a regular occurrence that long-suffering "SNL" lifers could count on.
